An old bike hidden in an old garage

While in Louisville earlier this week, Bob and I dropped in on our friends Winn and Vivian at their Highlands brownstone they are rehabbing.  Not much had been done to the old place since the 1930s or 40s so they really have their work cut out for them and it's nice to see that in the year since we first saw the place they've made quite a bit of progress, installing new plumbing, repairing the roof, insulating everything and building a new kitchen with modern conveniences while preserving important architectural features of the original structure.  The fact that he is reusing and repurposing as much of the tear down materials as possible is also pretty impressive.  The slate from the original roof will used for tile in one of the bathrooms.  Nice!

Wonder what stories this vintage Schwinn has to tell?
Winn took us out to the ancient two-story detached garage to show us a few of his side projects, drawing my attention to a cool, vintage Schwinn leaning on the back wall directly across from the front door.  Due to the nature of the very narrow stairwell currently without a hand rail, I decided not to climb to the second floor where the bike was housed for a closer look but did manage to snap the above photo for your viewing pleasure.  I wonder if Winn will ever decide to restore it?  Do any of you recognize this model or know anything about it?

Wish I'd realized you were in Louisville!

I don't recognize the bike, but if Winn doesn't want to restore it, tell him to get in touch with me. I could use a project like that!

I've been looking for a few years now for my first bike -- a turquoise Catalina with rainbows painted on the fenders, circa 1964. I don't know if I'll ever find it, but I keep trying! Old bikes have so much character.

CD, my first two bikes were Schwinns; both purple, the favorite color of every little girl. They made me feel so free

Cynthia: Our visit to Louisville was too short, I'm afraid. I'll have a little more on the reasons in an upcoming post. Winn tells me that Louisville's really exploding with transportation cycling due to the investments the city has made in paths and bike lanes. Hope I can bring my little Dahon on a future trip and check it out myself. I'll see if Winn wants to hold on to that bike.

+2!!! That bike would be s cool restored or even "slightly refubished",keeping the priginal charm.

I'm not sure what model it would be,but it doesn't look like the Hollywood or Breeze (both late 60's) in our shed (to be restored when I get to them,LOL,which is the purpose we bought them). Nice find,I'm interested to read any follow-up you hear from your friend :) Glad you enjoyed your trip,my friend :)

Like the VW Beetle, Schwinn bikes just hold a certain somethin' somethin' in everyone's heart, committed cyclist or not. The Schwinn is associated with so many firsts - first bike, first time encountering the world on one's own, first trip to school unaccompanied by an adult. Lots of sweet stories of innocense and indepence go with that bike.

I had a Schwinn Racer 1966 Black and my sisters had those Schwinn StingRays with banana seat one was purple the other yellow. Had great times on those Schwiins as kids

When I first started bicycle commuting, during the Arab Oil Embargo in 1973, I bought a new, brown Schwinn Varsity for the princely sum of $100.

Even when the embargo ended, I continued to ride the Varsity for another year until I was laid off. A couple of years after that, it was stolen out of the basement of a house I was renting with three other roommates.

The fond memories of that bike made it an automatic, common sense decision to go back to bike commuting in the summer of 2008 when gas prices spiked at over four bucks a gallon

Blues, you are truly ahead of your time! Some people whine about the high price of gas; others of us go to plan B.

When I called a company for garage door repairs Perth, I found my old bike which has a sentimental value to me. Your bike really looks old and I can’t even recognize what model it is.

My dad will replace our garage door Perth next month. I wonder if I can find an old bike there too.
